History of Bridgetown
Bridgetown was originally known as the Geegelup meaning place of gilgies. Based on the Noongar Aboriginal language, Gilgies refers to crustaceans. However, the Bridgetown Tourist Center confirms based on their research that Geegelup signifies “the place of spears”.
In 1868, Thomas Carey proposed to change the town’s name from Geegelup to Bridgetown. In June 9, 1868, his proposal was approved and the town’s name became official.
Since then, the suburb was developed with primary schools, Hotels, and post office. In 1885, the Bridgetown Agriculture was established that shove farmers to produce sheep, dairy products, fruits, and nuts.
In 1892, with the entry of gold rush, has brought wealth and prosperity to Bridgetown.
