About Capel
Capel is located on the Capel River in Western Australia and sits 212 km south of Perth, 17 km south of Bunbury, and 23 km north of Busselton. With a Mediterranean climate, expect cool wet winter and hot dry summer in the town.
History of Capel
Capel was a farming area with dairy and beef as their main products. It became popular as a hobby farm, which pave way for the introduction of new agricultural pursuits like viticulture, alpacas, and aquaculture.
Frederick Ludlow first discovered the Capel River in 1834. The Bussel family settled in the place after him and they named the land Capel in honor of Capel Carter Brockman, John Bussel’s daughter.
Settlers started to relocate in Bussels area in 1830. John Hutt and James Stirling acquired land in the region with goals to establish a town site in the place. However, the land was only surveyed in 1870’s.
Based on records, only 91 people had lived in Capel in 1898.
