Harvey is a humble town located between Pinjarra and Bunbury and nestles 140 kilometers south of the Western Australia’s capital city, Perth.
History of Harvey
The town Harvey was named after the Harvey River, which came from the idea of James Stirling. The River was discovered by Lieutenant William Preston and Dr. Alexander Collie after they settled in 1829.
The Harvey River was named in honor of Sir John Harvey RN, West Indies Station’s Commander-in-Chief. During that time, Stirling was in-charge of the HMS Brazen under his troops.
Comes with Stirling’s promotion was the authority to name Australia’s town’s and suburbs. He named some of Australia’s features after his colleagues.
The suburb of Harvey started its development into a private town in 1890’s. In 1893, a new railway station opens. In 1898, Harvey has over 93 residences.
Harvey recently gained national attention after Jessica Moloney, a local resident of Harvey, became a finalist in Australia’s Next Top Model.
