History of Waroona
In 1891, John Fouracre first settled in the land of Waroona. During those time, Waroona was still known as Drakebrook, which was named after the Assistant Commissioner General and landholder, Henry Drake.
In 1893, Pinjarra to Piction Junction railway line was opened. Thereafter, the land was surveyed and gazetted in 1895.
Joseph McDowell made a timber mill in the northern part of Drakebrook. However, new lands were surveyed just around the area due to the subdivision’s unpopularity. The land was named Waroona.
The term was inspired by Werroona meaning “resting place” located nearby Bendigo goldfield and was believed as McDowell’s hometown.
Present Day Waroona

Popular tourist and picnic spots are located near Drakesbrook Weir and Waroona Dam. There is also a camping ground nearby that offers exciting activities like water skiing and canoeing.
Craft and specialty shops and heritage arts and trails are also found in the suburb.
