About Wokalup
Wokalup is a small suburb in Western Australia with over 449 residents based on the 2006 census. It is situated 146 kilometers from Perth and 6 kilometers from Harvey. It also lies between the Brunswick Junction and the town of Harvey.
History of Wokalup
Wokalup’s name was derived from the aboriginal name Wokul meaning “the place or the carpet snake”. Before the irrigation, these kinds of snakes were mostly found on farm sheds. However, tiger snakes became widespread after the irrigation project.
The area was granted to the original land owner in 1830 but since no improvements were made several years after the turnover, the Western Australian Company acquires the land in 1840.
Thomas Hayward was the first to reside in Wokalup. He also started farming in Bundidup in 1859. During the 1860’s, roads and bridges were constructed with the help of the horse team and convicts.
Subsequently, the railway siding was opened and it was called Wokalup. The townsite was gazetted in 1963.
